The Power of Returning Japa Yoga: A Beautiful Practice

Picture this…
The room is quiet. We are gathered in a circle, and the chant begins. A soft sound at first, then growing, its vibration gently, reverberating around the space, holding us all within it.
The word japa comes from Sanskrit, meaning: the repetitive chanting or whispering of a mantra, sometimes drawn from ancient texts, or simply a sound or word that resonates.
Mantra too comes from Sanskrit: man, the mind, and tra, a tool or vehicle. A mantra, then, is a tool for the mind… something to carry us, or keep us focused, especially when our thoughts feel busy or scattered.
In chanting meditation, we choose a mantra and return to it, again and again. Not perfectly. Not without distraction. Without judgement. But gently, patiently. For fifteen minutes, or maybe thirty, depending on the intention we hold as a group, we sit within this rhythm of repetition.
And something begins to shift.
Because sound carries vibration, and vibration is a wonderful therapeutic modality that moves through us in ways we don’t always need to understand.
It softens..... It settles..... It heals.......
And when the mind wanders, as it will, we notice, and we return.
To the sound... To the breath...To ourselves...
Again, and again.
You don’t need to have done this before. You don’t need to understand every word. You arrive and let the sound carry you.
