Carrying a Quiet Intention

Right at the beginning of any project, or before we step into something new, there is often an invitation to set an intention. But what does that really mean?

Not a goal

Not a plan

Not something to achieve

Simply that — an intention

Somewhere along the way, intention became something we feel we must get right. We can feel pressure to choose something impressive, transformative, and life-changing, especially if we are invited to share it aloud. But an intention does not need to be elaborate. The most powerful ones are often simple. Gentle. Quiet.

A quiet intention might be: I want to feel present. I want to rest. I want to listen to myself again.

An intention is not something to force into existence. It is something to carry gently — like a small light held in your hands.

Coming on retreat offers space to choose something just for you. Not a long-term plan. Not a declaration of who you will become. Just a soft direction. A quiet presence you walk with.

We usually light a candle to mark the beginning. A simple flame to hold the intention, to symbolise healing, to remind us that something steady can burn even in stillness.

Many times, I have set the intention to re-learn how to simply 'be'. It is something I forget when life becomes full, and others need tending to.

Retreat allows me to pause. To notice the surroundings. To lay my thoughts and worries down at the door. Perhaps I will pick them up on the way home. Or perhaps I will discover I no longer need to carry them in quite the same way.

Carrying a quiet intention is only the beginning.

When we slow down enough to reflect — to write, to notice, to be honest — the intention becomes a conversation rather than a statement.

There will be a wonderful group setting the intention at our Soul Wellness Retreat, August 9th-13th, in the beautiful countryside of Portugal. Five Days and Four Nights of pure peace, relaxation, tranquility, and rest.
